The Cream of the Youth Crop

BA has a list out highlighting the top 5 youths at each age, 16-25.  This is the cream, the headliners, the bidness.  Here is the list

The Giants have 3, Christian Arroyo, Madison Bumgarner and Brandon Belt.  They would have a 4th, but they gave up Zack with a K Wheeler trying to win a championship.  It'll be a bad beat challenge trade from here on out, so it goes.

That ties the Dodgers, who have Yasiel Puig, Corey Seager and the young lefty phenom who is getting hugely hyped Julio Urias.  Of all the Bums prospects, he is clearly the best, and the one who can be a serious thorn in the side of the Gigantes.  And what he has done so far is very impressive.  I would caution that he isn't the second coming of Sandy Koufax yet, and he has to grind through some levels.  But he is definitely a name to know.

The Rockies have one, 2nd overall pick 2013 Jonathon Grey.  The Pads and D-backs have none.

The Pirates lead the list with 5.  I'd say their IFA guy is cooking with gas.  And they have benefited from a lot of losing.

You always hear about the Giants loving vets, not doing enough for impact and other silliness.  They're in the thick of the hunt, on the top of the top, with the shiny youth.  They're doing great.  They "get lucky" and hit on an IFA guy, and I do think Gustavo Cabrera would have at least been a thought although he'd be competing in the Arroyo age-group, and they will be cooking with gas along with the Pirates.

There are enough Dominican Dandies coursing through the system that the "get lucky" hit is going to come, sooner or later.  Lets watch Mella very closely, see what gives.

  1. And if they would have gone to age 26, Posey would have been on that list. Haters just hate, they can sink in their moral morass while we enjoy the TWO World Championships that none of the haters have thanked Sabean for yet.

    1. And if age 27... Pablo! Who for some reason is always called a freak of nature and not credited to the Giants. This is why its fun to rub Belt and Crawford in as examples of development success with hitters, because Posey is supposedly a "slam dunk" and Pablo is a "freak".

    2. A freak whom neither fans nor experts thought was so good right when he put everything together. I can understand freak, Timmeh is an excellent example, but freaks are just successful, just because. Like him and Vlad or I would throw in Trout too.

Panda toiled in the minors for years, and not as a top prospect, he was as fringe as they come, though showed enough to get ranked at least. The Giants not only worked with him, but kept the faith when all else did not. If that is not development, I do not know what is.

  3. Anyone know what the latest on Arroyo is? So far, all I've read about him is the lists he's made, but nothing about his spring. Did I miss something?

    1. Pretty quiet eh? Can't wait for assignments to come out. Arroyo, Ryder Jones, Matt Duffy, Ragira/Horan and Jeremy Sy are some of the guys I'm most interested in position player wise.

    2. Maybe a quiet spring, but I think he'll have a very loud season. In all honesty, I've been starting to get an inkling that Arroyo might end up in San Jose. Ryder Jones is playing SS... maybe he's ticketed for the gig in Augusta. If Arroyo is in the Cal League this year, he'll be on fast track city!

    3. Arrenado and Ryder on the left side of the infield in Augusta would be fun. Arroyo and Sy up the middle in San Jose would be fun too
