Scouting that Cuban 1B no less, with Felipe Alou at his side.
Giants GM Brian Sabean is in the DR along with Felipe Alou scouting cuban defector Jose Dariel Abreu
Like I've said earlier, its good to see the Giants at least paying lip service to the idea of going after the CBA exemptions like Cuba and Japan (Tanaka-san!). Pat the Bat was the noise in the far east, I guess he got distracted because the Giants weren't listed in Ben Badler's latest scouting report on Tanaka as one of the teams interested, present and what not.
I'll put that one right at the doorstep of Larry Baer and the RDF. Those guys do not want to put up 50MM cash on the barrel, I'll tell you that one for sure. So the Cuban gets the big guns, Sabean dusted off his best Guayabera and got to steppin'.
Abreu is a pretty known commodity. I'm sure the Giants have scouted him during international competition. So why the PR story? Most likely to let fans know they're ready to do something... maybe. I like that strategy a bunch more than "these Cubans, you never know" or the infamous "we won't be bidding on that Japanese shortstop". It doesn't cost anything to put on a better PR front, those blunt Sabeanisms, sometimes they're amusing and sometimes they're frustrating. I think that might be directly related to whether the Gigantes are winning or losing...
I think the Giants need to address their former strengths - defense and starting pitching - before moving onto the pen and the offense. But maybe they don't get that choice right away, and so I guess that Abreu is worth the look. Little mumblings about a slow bat have me a bit worried, plus I just don't see it as Sabean's style to commit to a 1B only guy. He likes his 1B to have some defensive skills over there.
So we'll see if Brandon Belt gets to dust off his OF mitt or not. I'm not holding my breath, but I also think that this is a better move than ignoring the markets all together.
